Early Life and Education
Russell Westbrook Jr. was born on November 12, 1988, in Long Beach, California. He grew up in a family of athletes, and his parents both played basketball in high school. Westbrook attended Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, California, where he played basketball and football. In his senior year, he was named the MVP of the 2006 Beach Ball Classic, and he was also named to the All-CIF Southern Section first team.
After high school, Westbrook attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he played for the Bruins for two years. In his sophomore year, he was named to the All-Pac-10 first team and was also a member of the Pac-10 All-Defensive team. He left UCLA after his sophomore year and declared for the NBA draft.
NBA Career
Russell Westbrook was selected fourth overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2008 NBA draft. He played his first season in Seattle before the team moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. In his rookie season, Westbrook averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Derrick Rose.
Westbrook's second season was even better than his first. He averaged 16.1 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game and helped lead the Thunder to the playoffs for the first time in his career. Westbrook continued to improve in the following seasons and became one of the best point guards in the league. In the 2010-2011 season, he was named to the All-NBA Second Team, and in the 2011-2012 season, he was named to the All-NBA First Team.
In the 2012 NBA Finals, Westbrook and the Thunder faced off against the Miami Heat. Although they lost in five games, Westbrook's performance was impressive. He scored 27 points in Game 1, 43 points in Game 4, and 19 points in Game 5. Despite the loss, Westbrook proved that he was a star player who could perform on the biggest stage.
In the 2016-2017 season, Westbrook had one of the most impressive seasons in NBA history. He became the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for an entire season, with 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game. Westbrook was traded to the Houston Rockets in the 2019 offseason, where he played for one season before being traded to the Washington Wizards in 2020.
